It started as a Norman fortress for King John in 1204 — most of what you see now is the Georgian rebuild after the 1684 fire.

Trinity College Old Library

Dublin, Ireland

Built between 1712 and 1732, the Long Room stretches nearly 65 metres and holds around 200,000 of Trinity's oldest books. Its barrel-vaulted ceiling was added in 1860, when the shelves outgrew the original flat roof — and at the far end sits the Book of Kells, copied by monks around 800 AD.
